Redbelt

I'll admit that I can be a stereotypical guy when it comes to action/martial arts movies. I love them! Give me Bloodsport, Drunken Master, heck, give me Kill Bill. I love them. Now Redbelt takes me a little beyond a typical martial arts film. It's a martial arts film for those who know little about it.
Redbelt stars Chiwetil Ejiofor (Children of Men, let's call him Chi for the sake of my dumbness) a martial arts instructor with a failing

arts school. He saves the life of Tim Allen (Galaxy Quest) an action movie star. Tim Allen offers to have our hero co produce his current action film. Things take a turn when Tim Allen blows Chi off, and Chi owes money to dangerous people. He decides to enter a martial arts championship to try to win the money, when he finds out the game is fixed. I'm really not selling this story well enough because there is more to it that I do not want to give away.
The story shows Chi as a genuine, wholesome character who has a love and passion for what he does and brings honor to the belt. Several people around him are trying to take advantage of that, and instead of succumbing and enduring, he rises above it.
Redbelt is directed by David Mamet who is mainly known for his writing credits such as The Untouchables, The Edge, Hannibal, and TVs The Unit. The film also stars Alice Braga (I Am Legend) and Emily Mortimer (Match Point) and Max Martini (TVs The Unit). Redbelt is available on DVD and I'm sure you can find a copy at R5 Records for an amazing price. Go watch it. It's great!
RANDOM REDBELT TRIVIA: Ed Onielle's (Al Bundy
from TVs Married With Children) practice of Brazillian
Ju-Jitsu partially inspired David Mamet to write REDBELT.
