Slumdog Millionaire
Among the several films I seen this holiday season, none sticks out more than Danny Boyle's (28 Days Later) Slumdog Millionaire. This Bollywood/Hollywood gem tells the story of the life of an impoverished Indian teen Jamal Malik (played by newcomer Dev Patel), who becomes a contestant on the Hindi version of "Who Wants to be A Millionaire?", wins, and is then suspected of cheating. However it his life experiences that drop him clues that pertain to the questions asked of him on the popular tv show. But the story is ultimately about Jamal Malik's lost love, Latika (played by Freida Pinto). The film's intensity only strengthens Jamal's will to get ahead in his life; to leave the slums, lead a good life, and be with the one he loves. Slumdog Millionaire uses it's cinematic tools with grace and style with memorable cinematography and editing. It's difficult to put into words the emotion one can get from a film that touches your heart and soul. A film like this is a rare gem that I am glad to have been able to witness.
Don't miss this film, really. Catch it at the Tower Theater on 16th & Broadway, across the street from R5 Records.
